The Declaration of Independence carved in walnut, hanging above a low white bench with a red, white and blue plaid throw in a bright, minimal room

History, made to be lived with.

The Piece

The Declaration of Independence, carved at the scale it deserves.

Faced in fine American hardwood, every word of the 1776 engrossed text, every flourish of every signature, carved letter by letter until the document reads in shadow and grain.

The Craft

Carved deep. Read by light.

We begin with a faithful tracing of the engrossed parchment that hangs in the National Archives: the slanting round hand of the clerk, the ornate blackletter of the title, and all fifty-six signatures exactly where the signers left them.

Each line is then carved into the panel on a precision router, cut deep enough to catch the light as it moves across a room. Every piece is sanded, finished, and inspected by hand in our studio before it is signed.

The Woods

Three American hardwoods.

Each carving is a hardwood veneer laminated to a dense, stable core. The grain varies from piece to piece and between sizes, so no two carvings are quite alike. Like any fine wood, a panel this large lives with the seasons, and its face only deepens in character with time.

Made to mark two hundred and fifty years of American independence. Each carving is numbered and signed on its back panel with the Freedom Carver maker's mark, a record of its place in the edition for the generations who inherit it.
